Bert JanschBert Jansch, Influential Scottish folk musician Bert Jansch has died after a long illness. The 67-year-old had been suffering from cancer. Jansch had a long career as a soloist and member of the 1970 popular rock band Pentangle.

Jansch was a prominent figure in the folk scene whose career spanned 60 decades, enjoying rave reviews and praise from other artists even though they have not shared his celebrity status.

It was a great influence on several generations of guitarists, from Led Zeppelin Jimmy Page and singer-songwriter Neil Young, the artists of later decades, including Johnny Marr of The Smiths and Bernard Butler of Suede, and also appeared in a recent album of Pete Doherty Babyshambles band.

Born in Glasgow and raised in Edinburgh, he moved to London in mid-1960 during the rise of popular music. Their first eponymous album was released in 1965, a song being recorded by fellow Scot Donovan an EP which reached number one in the United Kingdom.

A solo artist out, he joined the late 60’s Pentangle, a band of five that explored the influence popular music with rock and jazz. Enjoyed significant commercial success and touring, finally split in 1973.

Jansch solo continue after a pause of several years, and continued to tour.

With interest in continuing Pentangle, Jansch to play with a version of the band from 1980 to the 1990s while continuing his solo career, the five members finally reunification in 2008.

The band continued to work together, and played at the Glastonbury Festival and the Cambridge Folk Festival, and were working on new material in 2011.

A concert celebrating the 60th birthday Jansch was held at the Queen Elizabeth Hall in London, appears Johnny Marr, Bernard Butler and members of very reputable contemporary acts My Bloody Valentine and Mazzy Star, Ralph McTell and another veteran of the scene folk 60.

A 2005 tour was postponed after recovering from heart surgery, but he returned to his live show soon after and presented at events like the Edinburgh Festival and the Green Man Festival, and solo exhibitions in the U.S. . UU., Canada and continental Europe.

His most recent solo album, The Black Swan, was released in 2006, and was assisted by Beth Orton and Devendra Banhart.

His concert schedule continues until restricted by the disease, with solo exhibitions in Edinburgh during the festival in 2008 and touring with Pentangle the same year, including a date at Glasgow Royal Concert Hall, who had played the month of January during the Celtic Connections festival.

A solo concert, which had been scheduled for Edinburgh during the festival in August 2011 was canceled because of declining health.
