Benicio Del Toro

Benicio Del Toro, One of the nice things about reporting on Star Trek 2 is that there aren’t going to be a lot of casting rumors. We’ve already got the cast, thank you very much. Except for the villain of course, but that appears to be shaping up very quickly. Variety reports that director J.J. Abrams has met with Oscar-winner Benicio Del Toro about taking the role, which remains so secret that even Del Toro himself doesn’t yet know what it is. He’s expected to receive an official offer over the weekend.

As you can imagine, internet speculation assumes that Del Toro will be offered the role of Khan Noonien Singh, since Ricardo Montalban’s character famously appeared in the last Star Trek 2, Star Trek: The Wrath of Khan. Also, well, Del Toro and Montalban come from somewhat similar ethnic backgrounds. (Cough.) However, there’s no reason to assume that Khan will appear in the sequel at all, with such classic Trek characters as Harcourt Fenton Mudd and the Gorn being rumored as well.

Either way, Del Toro is a welcome to addition to any cast. The highly talented actor most recently appeared in the critically drubbed The Wolfman, which we kinda liked but nobody thinks is his fault regardless. He’s best known for his dramatic work in films like Traffic (a performance which won him a Best Supporting Actor Oscar), 21 Grams and The Usual Suspects.

CraveOnline will be back with more Star Trek 2 news after we rev up our nuclear vessels…
