Bears Quarterback

Bears QuarterbackBears Quarterback, Bears quarterback Josh McCown played better than his predecessor, Caleb Hanie, but it wasn’t enough to earn a win Sunday night against the Green Bay Packers.

In his first start in almost four seasons, McCown (19 for 28, 242 yards, one touchdown, two interceptions) posted a 76.8 passer rating in a 35-21 loss at Lambeau Field. McCown had only three practices to prepare for the Packers, who entered the game with a plus-20 turnover ratio.

Bears center Roberto Garza said he was impressed by McCown’s poise in the huddle. The Bears signed McCown on Nov. 23 to provide depth after Jay Cutler broke his right thumb.

“He did a great job of stepping in,” Garza said. “[It felt] like he has been here all season. He brought a lot of energy into the huddle.”

McCown threw a 1-yard touchdown pass to tight end Kellen Davis in the fourth quarter, but he also was picked off by Packers defenders Clay Matthews and Charlie Peprah.

It’s uncertain whether the 32-year-old quarterback will start next week against the Minnesota Vikings. Now that the Bears have been eliminated from playoff contention, they could turn to rookie quarterback Nathan Enderle for a one-game audition in preparation for next season.

Big man, big play: Bears guard Edwin Williams earned a lifetime memory when he recovered a fumble in the Packers end zone for a touchdown in the third quarter.

Williams was standing near the goal line when Peprah popped the ball loose from Bears running back Kahlil Bell. Williams calmly picked up the ball for a touchdown that cut the Packers’ lead to 14-10 with 11:35 to go in the third quarter.

Williams became the Bears’ first offensive lineman to score a touchdown since former tackle John St. Clair hauled in a 2-yard pass Sept. 16, 2007, against Kansas City.

Working holiday: The Bears played on Christmas for only the second time in team history.

The Bears’ previous Christmas game was in 2005, when they beat the Packers, 24-17, at Lambeau Field. Brett Favre threw four interceptions, including one that was returned 10 yards for a touchdown by Lance Briggs.

Bears bits: Hanie served as the Bears’ No. 2 quarterback behind McCown. Enderle was inactive. … Ex-Notre Dame running back Armando Allen made his NFL debut six days after he was promoted from the practice squad to the Bears’ 53-man roster.
