The woman screamed for help, but her husband was killed when the rangers arrived. The National Park Service has not released the name or hometown of the victim or his wife, but the preliminary assessment of the Park Service is that the mother bear felt threatened with the intention of protecting her cubs.
“It is extremely unfortunate that this couple’s journey into the Yellowstone backcountry has ended in tragedy,” said Yellowstone National Park Superintendent Dan Wenk. The attack was the first within the boundaries of Yellowstone Park since 1986, but there was a deadly landslide last year in a camp in the Gallatin National forest nearby.
