Lake Michigan Credit UnionLake Michigan Credit Union, Lake Michigan Credit Union opened a full service branch in downtown San Jose, May, first appearance of the institution in Berrien County – and the restoration of financial services in the historical building on State Street bank.

The credit union moved into the structure of limestone dome cover which opened in 1912 and became the people of the State Bank in 1932, remaining in that successive incarnations until Fifth Third Bank 11 years ago.

Construction of Giannole Joe said the building still housed the old vaults and one, workers even found a green marble enough to make the necessary renovations for the new user.

Since buying the building about 15 years ago, was occupied by Pizza Fox for about five years and today in San Jose for six years.

“They used it as a mechanism to help people who had problems – either physical or learning ability,” Giannole says, referring to Fox’s Pizza, “and the whole restaurant was oriented so you can help these young adults learn to sell pizza. ”

Today San Jose State Street down to the small rooms, and Lake Michigan Credit Union, which originally expected to open a mortgage office in the city, decided to install a full service branch and ATM center only.

“It was a very easy transition for them,” says Giannole. “We saved a lot of marble and cashier stations. We raised two teller stations for them.

“There are two vaults of day and is a large canopy, which actually has the safes in it yet.”

Lake Michigan Credit Union, which began in 1933 and headquartered in Grand Rapids, has 31 branches with another scheduled to open this year in Portage. With 2 million dollars in assets and 161,000 members, is the state’s largest credit union.
