Bay Area EarthquakeBay Area Earthquake, An earthquake and an aftershock, both on the Hayward Fault near Berkeley rocked the Bay Area on Thursday, the U.S. Geological Survey said.

The first quake, with a preliminary magnitude of 4.0, occurred at 14:41 The second, 3.8, was at 20:16

The epicenter of the earthquake earlier was 2 miles southeast of Berkeley, and the quake’s epicenter was a mile east of Berkeley. Both quakes were felt throughout the Bay and San Francisco.

In the district of Oakland, Montclair, the earthquake shook the evening dinner crowd, especially in the Italian colors on Mount Boulevard, where a piece of plaster fell from the roof.

“It was 3 inches by 5”, said manager Michael Profiles. “It was very dramatic.”

Police reported no damage in Berkeley, or reports of serious damage in Oakland.

Although the quake was a replica second USGS geophysicist Rafael Abreu said people do not get complacent.

“When you have an area of ??active seismicity as long as it is difficult to know if you’re really seeing a replica or just a regular earthquake,” he said. “You should be prepared for more earthquakes to happen, whether replicas or not.”

BART trains delayed for 15 minutes after the earthquake, while workers examine the system. They found no problems.

“My hands are still shaking,” said Krys Freeman, an administrator Web Greenbiz in Oakland, after the first quake hit his eighth floor office.

The quake was felt stronger may be for many in the East Bay that their magnitude 4.0 was suggested because the center was far below the surface, about 5.1 miles, said Jack Boatwright, a seismologist at the USGS. The second quake was about 6 miles deep.

The earthquakes occurred on the same day one year of the Great California ShakeOut earthquake preparedness exercise.

“You could not be more” ShakeOut “than this,” Abreu said with a smile.
