Barry Weiss Storage WarsBarry Weiss Storage Wars, SANTA CRUZ — “Restaurant: Impossible,” “The X Factor” and now … “Storage Wars.”  A slice of Santa Cruz will show up again on national TV Tuesday night in the A&E reality show, which pits bidders of abandoned or unpaid storage units against each other.

The buyers try to outfox each other in the auction and see who can recoup the investment from the units’ largely unknown contents.

In it’s “Blame it on the Rain” episode, a film crew shot an auction at The Storage Depot in Scotts Valley during a downpour on Nov. 11.

Judy Ball, director of the Storage Depot at 276 Mount Hermon Road, said the crew arranged the shoot ahead of time — but it came as a surprise to their regular 30-40 bidders. It turns out a lot of them watched the show.

“They said, ‘Oh my God, there’s Barry (Weiss). There’s Dave (Hester)!’” Ball said. “I thought it was great fun.”

The show, now in its second season, is the No. 1 watched A&E show of all time among viewers age 25-54, according to the network. It averaged 2.8 million viewers per episode in its first season.

In Scotts Valley, the show’s bidders spent several thousand dollars on five units. Ball mentioned that the money from the auction pays for the unpaid bill and any money beyond that is given back to the renter.
