Baby Found In Tornado

Baby Found In Tornado, A baby girl found critically injured in a field near her home here is the only member of her family to survive a tornado that killed her parents and two siblings, officials said Saturday.

The identities of the girl and her family have not been released, but officials confirmed Saturday that she was taken to St. Vincent Salem Hospital before being transferred to Kosair Children’s Hospital in Louisville, where she remains in critical condition.

The sheriff’s and coroner’s office in Washington County would not release the names of the girl’s parents. But neighbors Marcia and Beverly Lanham said the man who was killed worked in a nearby saw mill owned by Marcia’s ex-husband and son.

In their last moments, the girl’s parents and her two siblings who perished in the tornado in this tiny town were lying face-down in a hallway in their mobile home, holding hands and praying.

Beverly Lanham, who lives next door, said her boyfriend Jason Miller shared that image with her after trying in vain to save the family, going outside as the funnel cloud neared to warn them to get inside, offering a place in his bigger, double-wide mobile home. Lanham said the twister picked Miller up and threw him and members of the family across the neighborhood off Old Pekin Road.

Miller, 31, survived, with several broken bones, and was in stable condition Saturday at University Hospital in Louisville.

“He’s a hero,” said Lanham’s mother, Marcia Lanham, who sobbed Saturday as she helped her daughter sift through the rubble of the home she shared with her boyfriend. “He went next-door to bring them over, and they all got killed.”

Marcia Lanham walked toward what was left of the family’s flattened home. Among the rubble was a tray from a highchair, a pink wheel from a child’s bicycle and a yellow metal toy truck.
