Australian Shark AttacksAustralian Shark Attacks, It’s only the third week of January and Australia has already seen more shark attacks than it typically sees all year. The third Australian shark attack on a surfer occurred yesterday off the coast of a remote beach. It’s the second attack in two days and the third in less than three weeks.

The BBC reports that David Pickering was snorkeling through a lagoon in the Coral Bay when a shark attacked him. Pickering said:

“I turned around and boom, there he was. (The force) was enough to actually bring me forward and under him because I scraped my knee on his belly.”

Pickering was giving snorkeling lessons to a group of kids at the time. The 26-year-old Australian said:

“I’m pretty stoked that it happened to me and not one of those kids.”

ABC reports that Pickering was attacked by a 10ft tiger shark. Pickering was taken to the hospital where he was treated for severe lacerations on his arms. His injuries are not life threatening.

The BBC reports that another man was attacked near Newcastle on Wednesday. Witnesses believe that it was a great white or a ball shark. Earlier this month, another surfer was attacked in the city of Gosford, just north of Sydney.

In the last 22 years, Australian shark attacks have caused 27 deaths.

Would you get back in the water after a shark attack? Pickering said: ”I’ll definitely be back in the water – as soon as this bad boy is healed up.”
