Army Wives Season 5, “Army Wives” (Sun. 9 p.m. EST on Lifetime) finally returned to television screens Sunday night after a long hiatus, and Season 6 opened with a game-changer.

The Season 5 finale back in May closed with so many questions left unanswered: With Fort Marshall due to close, and the 23rd Airborne Division being disbanded, what did the future have in store for the “Wives?” Would their relationships survive the strain of being apart?

After weeks of packing and dreading the day that the base would be closed, the characters then had to endure a massive hurricane hitting Fort Marshall and large swathes of North Carolina.

In the post-hurricane aftermath, General Fleming revealed to Major-General Holden that Fort Hope had taken much heavier damage than first thought, with more than half the maintenance bays being destroyed.

“Hell, it’ll take six months and a boatload of money just to get Fort Hope up to 40 percent capacity,” he said.

In light of the massive destruction and the fact that Holden and his men had kept their post up and running during the emergency, the army had decided on a change of plan.

Fort Hope would now close instead, giving Fort Marshall a last-minute reprieve. Not only that, but Fort Marshall would get some upgrades. “It will be expanded to accommodate the 32nd Airborne Division as well as the 17th Corps. Airborne Headquarters” said Fleming.
