American Idol Elimination

American Idol Elimination, FOXShannon Magrane, shown singing on Wednesday night, was eliminated from “American Idol” last night.
Talk about a flash in the pan.

After establishing herself as one of “Idol’s” top females two weeks ago with an inspired performance, 16-year-old Florida native Shannon Magrane self-destructed in her past two performances and was eliminated last night.

The 6-foot volleyball player who gave J-Lo goose bumps in her live show debut destroyed herself with two poor renditions of monster tunes “I Have Nothing” and “One Sweet Day” from all-time divas Whitney Houston and Mariah Carey. In each song, her big voice found pitch problems in the legendary choruses and despite the judges’ kind words Wednesday, America couldn’t stand it anymore.

Below is the highlight of Shannon’s “Idol” journey in my opinion — her version of “What A Wonderful World” during Hollywood Week — and how the night shook out.

Bottom Three:

• Elise Testone
• Shannon Magrane
• Erika Van Pelt

The judges were all disappointed that after a strong performance of Al Green’s “Let’s Stay Together” on Wednesday, Elise was in the bottom three. They didn’t stay upset for long, though, as the Kinnelon native was sent to safety, leaving Shannon and Erika to sit and worry.

With the two tallest ladies and little Ryan Seacrest standing center stage, Seacrest announced that Erika had survived and Shannon would have to “sing for her life.”

Unfortunately for Shannon, she botched the same notes in Mariah Carey and Boys II Men’s “One Sweet Day” as she did on Wednesday.

In front of the 10 teary-eyed “Idol” contestants that just booked a summer of touring, the judges rightfully chose not to save Shannon, sending her back to her professional athlete father, monster house in Tampa, Fla. and what I would have to imagine to be a pretty fantastic teenage life.

Notes:

• I’m not sure if this is “Idol” law or not since the America-voting eliminations are just getting under way, but the contestants singing for their lives should not have to sing the same song again that they butchered the night before and ultimately landed them in the shark tank. Like death row inmates, they should at least have a chance to pick a song of their choice before being sent back to obscurity. If the show is going to force them to sing that same song over again, might as well just send them to the electric chair.

• Although I liked Shannon, sadly, America got this one right. Shannon’s last two performances had me putting a pillow over my face. Good job, “Idol” nation.
