American Idol 2012 AuditionsAmerican Idol 2012 Auditions, Phillip Phillips – yes, that’s his real name, as he told us in his intro package – was the final singer to audition on episode one of Season 11 of ‘American Idol’ in Savannah, Ga. Phillips first soared through a terrific version of Stevie Wonder’s ‘Superstition,’ and the singer was feeling it. While offering up his blue-eyed soul edition of the Motown classic, Phillips sang with his teeth gritted and his fists clenched. To say he was into it would be an understatement.

Jennifer Lopez said Phillips sings like there is electricity surging through his body. Additionally, the Southerner was a real charmer and decidedly unique, offering up something special and fresh with his voice. Oh, and did we mention that his name is Phillip Phillips? Could you just imagine? Fast forward to May 2012 and imagine host Ryan Seacrest standing on stage and announcing, ‘The winner of ‘American Idol’ is…Phillip Phillips.”

Okay, we’re getting a little too far ahead of ourselves there. Back to the present!

The judges then asked Phillip squared to strap on his guitar and perform a little more, and that’s just what he did. He strummed his acoustic axe, tapped his flip-flop-clad toes as he sang a twangy, dirt road version of Michael Jackson‘s ‘Thriller.’ Now that’s not something you hear every day.

Phillips was unanimously upstreamed and not just because the judges were tired, worn down and burnt to a crisp from their long day of auditions and had no fight left in ‘em. Phillips showcased true artistic tendencies and qualities, and the judges did ask for a second performance, so you know he had to be good if they wanted more after having seen hundreds of hopefuls throughout the course of the day.
