Amber Riley Glee, “Glee” was already planning to cover Whitney Houston on Tuesday’s episode – the show’s first time doing so, star Matthew Morrison told CNN – but the performance has since also turned into a tribute.

Keeping in tune with Valentine’s Day, the episode featured plenty of love songs, and Amber Riley’s character Mercedes ended up belting out “I Will Always Love You” to her love interest/ex, Sam.

The song was pre-planned, and when news broke of Houston’s death Saturday, Riley, after expressing her shock, added in a tweet that she was glad to have the opportunity to pay tribute to the singer.

The actress, who turns 26 today, said after last night’s show, “OK, I got through it, only minimal tears. I hope you are proud Ms. Houston. [T]hanks guys for the kind words.”

When some suggested Saturday that Riley was a good choice to sing at Houston’s Grammy tribute, Riley admitted she wasn’t sure if she could make it through without crying.

Jennifer Hudson, who was tapped to assist in Sunday’s Grammys tribute and turned in a moving rendition of “I Will Always Love You,” was also visibly emotional during her performance.
