Affordable Care Act, This week was the second anniversary of Congress’s passage of the Affordable Care Act, the Obama administration’s plan to provide health coverage to millions of uninsured Americans. Next week, the Supreme Court will hear three days of oral arguments about the constitutionality of the law.

U.S. Supreme Court websiteU.S. Supreme Court building, Some of Louisiana’s Republican lawmakers want to see the law overturned. Rep. Steve Scalise, R-Jefferson, said: “Just in the last two years we have seen how destructive President Obama’s unconstitutional government takeover of health care has been to our economy and our health care system.”

The White House has a different take. It said that 2.5 million more young adults have health insurance on their parents’ plans. In 2010 and 2011, over 5.1 million seniors and people with disabilities on Medicare have saved more than $3.1 billion on prescription drugs and won access to preventative services, including mammograms. And perhaps most importantly, the White House said, insurance companies can no longer drop coverage when a person gets sick. And that’s before the main provisions designed to help people obtain private medical insurance take effect in 2014.

Rep. Bill Cassidy, R-Baton Rouge, said it’s his hope that with a new president and Republican Congress that the health overhaul law, which the GOP labels Obamacare, will be repealed next year.
