Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, Lewis Hamilton produced a near-flawless performance on Sunday when he took full advantage of the early retirement of Sebastian Vettel, the double world champion, to win a sizzling day-night Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix.

Hamilton, celebrating the third win of a troubled season for the 2008 champion, enjoyed a clean race to take the checkered flag 8.4 seconds ahead of Ferrari’s Fernando Alonso with his McLaren-Mercedes teammate Jenson Button in third.

“A mega-job, mega, as always,” said Hamilton on team radio on his victory lap. “I want to dedicate this one to my mum on her birthday and it is great having her here this weekend.”

Hamilton described himself as “ecstatic” and “fantastic”, adding: “That was one of my best drives of my career. I looked after my tyres, I managed the gap, and the team did a great job, so I’m happy to be back up here. I can now get on my flight tonight and smile.”

Asked if he was back on track after all his troubles, he said: “I don’t know. It’s early days. We’ve a great race in Brazil coming up, so I just need to try and keep the momentum.”
