Nebraska Road Closures,A Blizzard Won’t Stop This Baby:Fierce weather and treacherous road conditions forced many to stay at home on Thursday and Friday, but Nebraskans Ryan and April Schweizer knew it was a sign to get on the move.

They didn’t want April to have their first-born child in a snowbank.

Ryan, 29, and April, 34, of rural Allen, Neb., have been holed up at the Hilton Garden Inn in Sioux City since Wednesday, waiting for the birth of their daughter, Atlee.

They made the unexpected trip to Sioux City rather than risk April going into labor during the snowstorm and be forced to make a 30-mile trip to the delivery room at St. Lukes Regional Medical Center.

“April is due to give birth at any moment and if the baby doesn’t come between now and Monday then they’re going to go ahead and induce,” Ryan Schweizer said from the couple’s hotel room on Friday.

It was probably a good call, as the Nebraska State Patrol announced several road closures in northeast Nebraska. State snowplows were called off the roads Friday and officials warned motorists that emergency vehicles may not be able to reach them if they become stranded.

So far, baby Atlee Ryan Schweitzer hasn’t given any clues she plans to arrive any time soon.

No contractions. Nothing.

If the weather lets up, they might go home a little early. If not, they’ll continue to wait it out at the hotel.

In the meantime, they’ve been playing the games they brought along and have been staying in touch with relatives through their computer. When that fails, they just hang out and talk.

“Yeah, just really get to know each other,” April Schweitzer said.

When the baby finally arrives, she will be the first child for April, a Nebraska native, and Ryan, who grew up near Amarillo, Texas.

Although he’s no stranger to severe winter weather, Ryan Schweitzer said he heard about the storm and wondered what could possibly happen next.

“It’s such a joyous yet stressful time and now the storm on top of it,” he said. “It’ll be a fun story to tell on down the road.”
