Sprint Echo, Sprint Nextel Corporation NYSE: S yesterday launched a dual-screen equipped smartphone called “Echo” which could cause a shift in the communications and cell phones in the industry. The phone has been designed so that both displays are placed side by side; it slides over another to form the big screen.

A Japanese electronics company Kyocera Corporation has manufactured the phone. Dual display that sets this mobile from the traditional because it allows users to have completely different tasks simultaneously. Both screens have the ability to form a single screen to provide a wide working area but they can also be used independently to use the advantage of multitasking Echo.

The multi-tasking mobile phone can be used multiple ways. For example you can read e-mails on one screen and respond using a keyboard with oversized screen on the second screen. Or watching videos on a screen and surf the Web using the second screen. The Echo is equipped with the Android software from Google.

Sprint Nextel Corporation NYSE: S offers a range of communications products and wireless and wireline services for individual consumers, businesses, government customers and resellers. Company has two main business segments, wireless and wireline. Company provides these connectivity services and voice data transmission to subscribers in 50 states, Puerto Rico and U.S. Virgin Islands under the Sprint brand, which includes the company’s retail brands, including Sprint, Nextel, Boost Mobile, Virgin Mobile and wireless networks that use the insurance Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA), integrated Digital Enhanced Network (iDEN), or Internet Protocol (IP).

After handling the phone for nearly an hour at the launch event yesterday evening, I am now not so sure that this is not a brilliant idea.

But throughout the demonstrations and I kept thinking the scarecrow from the Wizard of Oz (the movie, not the book). First, he told Dorothy that goes in a sense it was a good idea. However, he reflected, perhaps the other way has its advantages. Then he finally admitted that some people liked both directions.

Echo is for the latter group simultasking.

It is three, three, three phones in one

As you probably already know, the Echo has two 3.5-inch flat screens on each other. Unfolded and snapped, you get a single square by 4.7 inches diagonally measured screen with a bezel-eighth of an inch between them. This is not the first phone with dual screen; however, Fujitsu has unveiled one for the Japanese market last year.

Echo Android 2.2 OS has been optimized to work in three ways.

You can run one application on a large screen and scroll as if it were a single screen.

You can run a single application logically divided into two – e-mail application, for example, your Inbox is displayed on the left screen while holding Echo with the seam vertical, and open an e-mail on the right screen. Reply to an e-mail to the phone so that the seam is horizontal, and top screen displays the message blank, the bottom of QWERTY. In the Gallery, you get thumbnails on the bottom screen (by holding the phone with the seam running horizontally) and a picture right on the top screen. You can surf the Web with a site occupying two screens or two different sites, each on its own screen.
