7 Billion People7 Billion People, 7 million people inhabit the Earth on October 31, according to United Nations estimates that as reported by the Associated Press.

That day, the seven billionth person will be born and the Press Association expects the world population will reach eight million mark in 2025 and 10 million in 2083.

John Bongaarts, vice president of the Population Council, said the rapid population growth would be devastating to the environment.

“Rapid population growth is leading to freshwater scarcity and depletion of groundwater, particularly in densely populated countries in the developing world,” Bongaarts said in a podcast of New Woodrow Wilson Center’s blog suddenly summoned by the Security Press Association reported. “We are constantly increasing population also contributes to pollution of local and global environments.”

In addition, the Associated Press reported that Bongaarts said that while the richer countries can manage such increases in population, is that the poorest countries would be devastating.

On the other hand, Babatunde Osotimehin, executive director of the Population of the United Nations, said the seven billion mark should be a call to action.

“It’s an opportunity for the problems of the people, the rights of women and family planning back to center stage,” he said. “There are 215 million women worldwide who need family planning and do not understand. If we can change that, and these women can take control of their lives, we will have a better world.”
