405 Closure Los Angeles405 Closure Los Angeles, The drivers in front of the San Diego (405) through Los Angeles freeway should be aware that after months of planning and the media week and the advertising campaign, called “Carmageddon” weekend begins tonight (July 15) when the frewway is closed through the Sepulveda Pass.

The road will be closed for 53 hours as a construction contractor – Kiewit International – debunks the southern half of the bridge spanning the 405 Mulholland, near Skirball Cultural Center. The demolition is part of an expansion project and 1200 million to add carpool lanes and make other improvements to the 405 in the Sepulveda Pass. The overall project is scheduled to be completed in 2013.

Starting tonight, the highway will be closed northbound for 10 miles between Santa Monica (10) and Ventura (101) freeways. The highway to the south will be closed for six miles of Highway 101 at Getty Center Drive. The highway and all ramps are expected to reopen to traffic from 6 am Monday.

With nearly 500,000 people are using the highway in that stretch on weekends, local authorities have been urging residents for weeks to avoid the area this weekend and avoid congestion stretching from West Los Angeles to the Valley.

In the worst traffic jams expected throughout the region, as residents turned a deaf ear to stay out of the search paths for alternate routes to and from the San Fernando Valley.

“In general, all routes to the highway in Los Angeles will experience much greater volume and, in some selected routes more congestion during the weekend,” said Doug default, executive director of Project Highway Metropolitan Transportation Authority. “The roads near the central business district will experience the most congestion, as these are closest to the routes of the project area.

“The idea of?? Staying home and shopping locally is not just to the west and San Fernando Valley,” he said. “It’s really going to take everyone working together for the Lakers stay at home and shopping locally to keep our region moving. Some of us can stay home, but can most of us.”

Metro offers free fares on the railroad tracks and light purple red this weekend, as well as the rail-bus through the Orange Line San Fernando Valley and 26 other bus lines on major routes in the area.

“I need to all chip Angeleno turn this ‘Carmageddon’ hype in a lifetime opportunity,” said Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa in a Metro Web site message.

“It’s an opportunity to explore your neighborhood in your small business support and to find local public transport,” said Villaraigosa. “… So this weekend, please, biking, strolling, but whatever you do, stay off the roads.”

The freeway and ramps are all expected to be reopened at 6 am, in time for the trip Monday morning. If the road is not open in time, the contractor faces fines of 6,000 and for every 10 minutes late.

Metro officials said the demolition of the bridge would take place with explosions and dynamite, but persistent jackhammer.

At midnight tonight about four feet of earth piled on the highway under the bridge to prevent damage from falling debris. 2 am, a diamond saw blade begins to cut off the upper deck of the bridge – to ensure that the northern half of the bridge is securely held in place while the southern half collapses.

Giants mounted machine-jack-hammers will start at 5 am Saturday. About 4,000 tons of concrete will be removed during the demolition project.

The northern half of the bridge will be demolished next year, that is, another long freeway closure will be planned.
