Lottery Winner Defends Use Of Food Stamps, She won a million dollars in the lottery, but a Michigan woman says she won’t be giving up her food stamps.  Amanda Clayton admitted she bought a new house and a new car, but says she is still entitled to government help.

“Well, I thought that they would cut me off, but since they didn’t I thought maybe it was okay because I’m not working,” Clayton told a Detroit television station.

“But you won a million dollars,” the reporter shot back.

“No, I won a million, but after I took the lump sum it dropped down to $700,000 and then after taxes it was just a little bit over half,” Clayton replied.

“Taxpayers are really struggling; [they] really need that money,” the reporter continued. “Do you really think you have a right to that money?”

“I mean… I kind of do. I have no income and I have bills to pay. I have two houses.”

Lawmakers in Michigan are now working on a bill that would keep lottery winners from getting state assistance.

FOX5 Facebook fans are responding to the story en masse. One fan wrote:

“R u freakin kidding and people that really need help can’t get it”

Another added: “She should be slapped upside her head then all the “assistance money” she has received should be paid back with interest and penalties. What a waste of human existence…”
