2012 Ford Focus Electric, Ford says the 2012 Ford Focus Electric will get a 110 MPGe rating in city driving from the EPA, beating the Nissan Leaf.

The Leaf returns 106 MPGe in city driving, according to the EPA. The Mitsubishi i remains the 2012 fuel economy leader, with a 126 MPGe rating in city driving, according to the EPA.

The EPA has yet to amend its 2012 Fuel Economy Leaders chart on its Web site to reflect the rating on the Focus Electric.

The Focus Electric returns 99 MPGe in highway driving versus 92 MPGe on the highway for the Leaf. Since electricity is not measured in gallons, a conversion factor is used to translate the fuel economy into miles per gallon of gasoline equivalent.

Ford said in a statement that the EPA-approved Focus Electric label certifies that the car has a range of 76 miles on a single charge. The automaker said it will ramp up Focus Electric production in the first half of 2012 for dealership availability in California, New York and New Jersey.

“By the end of 2012, Focus Electric will be available in 19 markets across the U.S.,” it said.

The Focus Electric rating comes at a time when the AAA Daily Fuel Gauge says the current average price for a gallon of regular unleaded gasoline stands at $3.74 versus $3.42 a year ago. The rising price of gasoline has become a recurring theme among Republican presidential candidates, too.
