2 Days In New York

2 Days In New York, “2 Days in Paris” harbored no doubts about how French Julie Delpy’s 2007 film was. Delpy is Paris born. All the action between her character Marion and American boyfriend Jack, played by Adam Goldberg, takes place in the City of Lights.

So,with the location tables turned, but with another American actor in the form of Chris Rock playing Marion’s second boyfriend, how French is Delpy’s new Sundance film “2 Days in New York?”

Based on separate interviews during the film’s Monday red carpet Delpy and co-star Alexia Landeau, who plays Marion’s sister Rose in both films, disagree on just how Gallic the new film is.

“It’s a little French, maybe 30 percent,” Delpy said, pausing to laugh. “And 70 percent American.”

Landeau, also Paris born, goes further down the Francophile road in her assessment.

“The French are a huge part of it,” Landeau said. “There’s a very ‘unPC’ French side to it. The French say whatever they want to, whatever they think. They don’t edit themselves.”

After seeing the film it’s hard not to side with Landeau, if only because the French characters-Delpy’s real-life father Albert Deply among them-outgun the stateside American characters by a ratio of four-to-one. Scene after scene showcases a flustered and confused Chris Rock up against three French in-laws with marginal or nonexistent English skills. Rock said at the film’s Q&A after its world premiere screening that he fueled the awkwardness just as well: He knows no French.
