Suzanne MubarakSuzanne Mubarak, Suzanne Mubarak has a heart attack after being interrogated, too A month ago, ousted the Egyptian president, Hosni Mubarak, was hospitalized in the Red Sea resort of Sharm el-Sheikh for a heart attack after prosecutors began questioning over allegations of corruption, abuse of authority, and murder of demonstrators during the Egyptian revolution.

The 83-year-old Mubarak is still detained in hospital, and now his wife, Suzanne, joined him. Ms. Mubarak, 70, was sent to the intensive care unit after investigators arrested for questioning about whether she used her position to amass wealth illegally. The hospital’s director of Sharm El Sheikh, Mubarak said he suffered a “heart attack and have course a strong increase in blood pressure,” he later learned of her arrest, according to AFP.

Is expected to eventually be transferred to a prison in Cairo, where the couple’s two children are detained as part of a broader effort by the Egyptian authorities to eradicate corruption.

The New York Times notes that it is unclear whether prosecutors actually build a case against Ms. Mubarak, or simply want information on the wealth of her family. Mrs. Mubarak was well known for her work with charitable organizations, promotion of women’s issues (opposed to female genital mutilation, for example), and support for the Arabic version of Sesame Street, Alam Simsim, but the diplomatic cables released by WikiLeaks and the Egyptian state media reports also suggest that plays an important role in the Mubarak regime and campaigned for her son Gamal to succeed his father.
