Super Antibody, Researchers say they have discovered the first antibody that can fight against all types of influenza viruses. Experiments in mice infected with influenza, show that the antibody can be used emergency treatment.
There is hope that this discovery could become a universal vaccine. Currently, new vaccines have to be done every winter, because the viruses change from year to year.
It has been suggested that people who contracted the swine flu and survived may have developed super-immunity to other infections. The researchers isolated an antibody, called FI6.
This antibody is directed to all known subtypes of influenza virus. This antibody is fully protective against lethal doses of H1N1.
However, this is only the antibody and the vaccine. The vaccine that will address all forms of influenza is still years away, but it looks more promising every day.
