Stefano Canturi The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, Wearing a black strapless party dress, pink peep-toe stil*ttos, and a stunning necklace featuring a one-carat Fancy Vivid diamond, the world’s most expensive Barbie (estimate: $300-000-500.000) is set to cross the auction block in a bid to raise funds for breast cancer research. Designed head-to-toe by fine jewelry designer Stefano Canturi, this one-of-a-kind Barbie is being offered by Christie’s New York as a special item within its blockbuster Jewels: The New York Sale on October 20.2010. The item will be auctioned without reserve and all profits from the sale will benefit The Breast Cancer Research Foundation, in recognition of Breast Cancer Awareness Month.

«Barbie by Stefano Canturi» (pictured above) wears a Canturi collar necklace, exemplifying Stefano Canturi’s'Cubism’style of arranging carré- and baguette-cut diamonds in his signature geometric pattern. Three carats of white diamonds comprise the dazzling necklace, which is centered on a one-carat emerald cut Fancy Vivid purplish-pink diamond (pictured at right), a registered tendered stone from the Australian Argyle mine. Collector demand for colored diamonds of this saturation and hue are on the rise, yielding auction prices in excess of $300.000 per carat.

Canturi was invited to create this special Barbie after a successful collaboration with Mattel for Barbie doll’s 50th Anniversary celebration last year. With a new challenge to add to his artistic repertoire, the Australian designer spent four weeks designing the doll’s frame, hair style, makeup, dress, shoes, nail polish, and of course, her exquisite jewels. Having created the world’s most expensive Barbie, Canturi then partnered with Christie’s and The Breast Cancer Research Foundation to ensure the auction of this iconic doll will result in a significant and meaningful contribution to the many women who inspire him and for whom he designs.

«We are honored and thrilled that Stefano Canturi chose The Breast Cancer Research Foundation as the beneficiary of this special Barbie, » said Evelyn H. Lauder, Chairman and Founder of The Breast Cancer Research Foundation. «It is a perfect match as brcf supports special research. »

«Barbieby Stefano Canturi» was unveiled to the public for the first time on September 10 at New York’s Fashion’s Night Out to rave reviews. Canturi will host additional previews of the doll at its Las Vegas and New York salons before placing Barbie on public view at Christie’s Rockefeller Center galleries in New York as part of its pre-sale exhibition running October 16 – 19. The Christie’s auction and preview are both free and open to the public.

In previous years, Christie’s has achieved exceptional prices for rare and unique Barbie dolls offered from private collections. In September 2006, Christie’s South Kensington set a world auction record of $17.091 for the most expensive Barbie doll sold at auction. The doll, created in 1965 and known as Barbie in «Midnight Red» was from the largest known private collection of Barbie dolls, nearly all of which were sold by Christie’s in a single landmark sale.
