State Dinner

State Dinner, (AFP) – Action Jackie Chan and pop diva Barbra Streisand is on top of a list of hosts, including three presidents and political elites of the media during a state dinner of the United States for Chinese President Hu Jintao Wednesday.

At the request of the Chinese side, the menu for dinner in honor of Hu, after a day of frank discussions at the White House, was par excellence of American dishes like Maine lobster poached and dry-aged steak with creamed spinach.

And nothing could be more American than apple pie, the former offered as dessert in a grand finale to a meal washed down with a selection of wines from California and Washington state.

Hu, wearing a business suit, posed with President Barack Obama, black tie, and the First Lady Michelle Obama, who wore a flowing red dress and black off the shoulder after his arrival in the portico north of the White House.

On the list of 225 guests for dinner Obama third State were his two predecessors as Democratic presidents, Bill Clinton and Jimmy Carter. Previous events honored the Mexican and Indian leaders.

Henry Kissinger, then Nixon’s national security adviser and secretary of state who played a key role in establishing relations with Communist China, has also been invited.

Customers in the arts and the media included the cellist Yo Yo Ma, whose parents were of Chinese origin, and Anna Wintour, the editor of Vogue magazine.

Wendi Deng, wife of media mogul Rupert Murdoch, showed up without her husband, who said she was traveling.

After the dinner show was to be provided by Herbie Hancck and Chinese pianist Lang Lang classic.

Several major powerplayers Washington, which would normally have expected a state dinner has declined invitations middle of the anger on Capitol Hill over China’s human rights and economic policies.

Harry Reid Senate Democratic Majority Leader, Senate Republican Mitch McConnell Minority Leader Republican and chairman of the House John Boehner – now the third highest official of the United States elected – all chose not to attend.

But the former Speaker Nancy Pelosi, who now heads the Democratic minority in the House, was on the guest list, despite its history of fierce denunciations of China’s human rights.
