Spokeo, Spokeo.com is a search engine that gathers information from social networking sites like Facebook, Myspace and Twitter and other places such as telephone directories, market research, and even census data and puts it all in one place.
“I am a bit worried,” said Allison Fondacaro, Albany.
“It is a very interesting and scary,” said Gary Robbins, a computer expert who owns Solutions by Design, Inc. in Delmar.
He said that in this day and age you could access almost anything about anyone on the Internet.
“People can find information about you, but to have everything in an easy-to really change the game,” said Robbins.
This website may include your address, a photo of your house and street where you live, how long have you lived there, their approximate age and income, marital status, and more.
“I do not think they have the right to do that,” Megan Dority, Delmar said.
However, Robbins said they do.
“It’s all publicly available information,” said Robbins.
“It’s a lot of information, wow, are my hobbies in there too,” said Cody Germain, Clifton Park, after checking the site for the first time.
But not all in his profile was 100 percent accurate.
“I am not Catholic, but other than that, that’s pretty good information. I do not know how they got all that,” said Germain.
Because some information posted on Spokeo.com is wrong, could be bad if someone important, as an employer, search the web to find out about you.
That’s why it’s a good idea to make sure that anything you post online that you would be willing to share with everyone.
“The only thing I tell people is be careful what you put online,” said Robbins.
“I’m more cautious now … definitely,” said Dority.
There are ways to remove your information from http://www.spokeo.com/privacy visiting the website and following the steps.
Robbins said that this process is difficult. It is recommended to pay a monthly fee for a service like Defender.com reputation that will run through all the online databases with information about you and we will remove your request.
