Tonight was the center of a 60-minute exposure presented by Byron Pitts.

Expect more media stories to follow in the coming days and weeks as “sovereign citizens” became a hot buzzword synonymous with angry citizens and disenfranchised who are portrayed in the next segment as open to violence against politicians and police alike.

This is a story about a group of Americans who probably never heard of “. Sovereign citizens” who call many do not pay taxes, carry a driver’s license or have a Social Security card. They have little respect for the police or the courts, and some have turned violent.

The FBI lists among the main threats of domestic t*rror*sm in the nation.

By some estimates, some 300,000 citizens in the U.S. sovereign and with the sluggish economy and the mortgage disaster, their ranks are growing.

Have you heard of the sovereign citizen movement? Alfred Adaska explains the theory of man of straw and other anti-government beliefs “60 Minutes.”

Is exactly the kind of movement that attracted people like Jerry Kane? A divorced, out of work truck driver from Ohio, Kane became a sovereign citizen in 2003, when he lost his home to foreclosure. To earn a living, he and his son began traveling the country selling a scam debt reduction.

Kane promised that, taking an imaginary account of people the government could achieve financial salvation. “It fits in all situations. No matter what we’re talking … traffic ticket, IRS, mortgage, credit card, hospital bills, and child support. Whatever it is,” he told an audience in one of his seminars.

For 2009, confidence in oneself Kane and white label jacket could not hide the reality. Indeed, it was broke. Its debt elimination seminars were a failure.

As a sovereign citizen, Kane had no driver’s license. His car was registered to a fake charity. Traffic stops resulted in arrests, and each of them, the wrath of Kane to the authority deepened.

“I do not want to have to kill anyone. But if you keep picking on me, that am what’s going to have to leave, that am what’s going to come down to is that I have to kill. And if you have to kill one then I will not be able to stop, “said Kane, one of his seminars.

Absorb everything was 16 Kane’s son, Joe, home-schooled and rose in the ideology sovereign.

On May 20, 2010, the minivan was stopped Kane on I-40 for two West Memphis, Arkansas police officers.

A dashboard camera captured what happened next: Kane came off the truck. Seemed argumentative. Instead of a license, had delivered a document declaring their sovereignty. The officials seemed confused by it. Then there was a fight.

Young Joe Kane jumped off the truck and began firing an AK-47. Fifty-eight seconds later, as Kane prepared to flee, the teenager shot four times.

A trucker called 911.

“I heard a call go out on the radio, saying:” Officer down! “The second time he says that two officers down the 275 miles,” said Police Chief Bob Paudert West Memphis correspondent Byron Pitts.

Chief Paudert was among the first to arrive. An officer lay motionless on the pavement, a second in a ditch. Fellow officers came to his aid.

“They kept saying,” Bill, you’re going to be OK, Bill; you’ll be all right. “Well, I knew then it was Bill Evans. And I ran down the hill with Bill. He was wounded very badly. And as I started down the slope of a sergeant was there and stopped me. He said:” Chief, please do not go there. I said, ‘Is Brandon? He said, ‘Yes,’ “recalled Paudert.

“Brandon is the sergeant. Brandon Paudert, the head of 39-year-old son.

“I was there. And Brandon was lying on his back with the gun still in his right hand clenched in his hand,” recalled Paudert.

Brandon Paudert died instantly from a gunshot to the head, Bill Evans was pronounced dead at a hospital. They had taken 25 bullets between them.

Police cornered Jerry and Joe Kane 90 minutes later. The Kanes wounded two lawmen more before they were killed in the parking lot of Wal Mart.
