Shrek Glass Recall:A dangerous metal called cadmium has been found in “Shrek”-themed cups sold in McDonald’s restaurants across the country, leading to fast-food giant to recall 12 million collection items. The 16-ounce glasses have been going for $ 2 each, and the success of ‘Shrek Forever After “at the box office, which has been a hot topic since its debut May 21. The glasses have been available in four designs – Shrek, Fiona, Puss in Boots and Donkey.
McDonald’s announced Monday morning that it would post instructions on its Web site next week on refunds. Until then, they say to stop using glasses.
What is cadmium? The CPSC said in its recall notice that “long-term exposure to cadmium can cause adverse health effects.” Cadmium is a known carcinogen that research shows can cause softening of the bones and severe kidney problems.
McDonald’s told the Associated Press that he was asking customers to stop using the glasses “out of an abundance of caution.”
“We believe that the” Shrek glassware is safe for consumer use, “said McDonald’s USA spokesman Bill Whitman. “However, once again to ensure our customers receive safe products from us, we decided to stop selling and voluntarily recalled these products with immediate effect.”
