Showtime Southern 500, Unexpected winners rarely occur in Darlington. In fact, to match Regan Smith surprising victory in the most difficult track in NASCAR, you have to come back to win the speed race at Darlington Lake in 1988 alone.
Every week – Carl Edwards, who yearns for victory in Darlington, had to settle for second in a race that would have been his had not been for a wave of late yellow flags. But the victory prompted Edwards-point lead Sprint to the Cup 23, which are about 92 under the format used before this season.
Clean and tidy – Each of the four manufacturers put a driver in the first four finishing positions: Smith (Chevy), Edwards (Ford), Brad Keselowski (Dodge) and Kasey Kahne (Toyota).
Notable numbers: 2 – Number of times Kurt Busch was penalized in the pits.
11 – caution flags and laps led by Smith.
21 – Lead changes
78 – The winning number of the car. The last time No. 78 won a race, the driver was Jim Paschal.
124 – Laps led by Busch.
“I just hit the wall once, but hit me hard. I am a little disappointed with the room, but I’m very disappointed in myself” -. Kasey Kahne (fourth)
“I really do not know how to put into words. It’s so surreal,” -. Regan Smith
“We are digging and up all night.” – Marcos Ambrose (13)
“I’m sure will feel good tomorrow, but at this point, I wanted to win that race.” – Carl Edwards (second)
“I wanted to make sure that if he could not win, he (Smith) could.” – Brad Keselowski (Third)
