SAS Saddam StatueSAS Saddam Statue, Nigel “Spud” Ely, a former member of the SAS, was guarding a camera crew while they filmed jubilant Iraqis pulling down the giant statue in Baghdad in April 2003.

While protecting the crew the 52 year-old up took part of the bronze statue that formed part of the tyrant’s backside.

Mr Ely, now a best-selling author, brought the two foot piece back to Britain once his duties were completed.

The toppling of Saddam Hussein’s statue become of the most powerful symbols of the end of the hated regime’s downfall.

But it was reported on Tuesday that Mr Ely, from Derby, has been interviewed under caution following a complaint from the Iraqi government. He denies wrongdoing.
