Sania Mirza, NEW DELHI: Anastasia Rodionova of Australia defeated local favorite Sania Mirza 6-3, 2-6, 7-6 (3) on Saturday to win the gold medal in women’s singles in the first tournament of tennis games the Commonwealth.
“I’ve been trying really hard and now I feel I am a real Australian medal after winning the Commonwealth Games,”said Russian-born Rodionova, which ranks 67th in the world.” I remained calm.”
Mirza rallied from a set down to a deciding set and take it to a tiebreaker. But behind 3-6, Mirza was unable to defend three match points as the constant shouts of encouragement from the center court at the RK Khanna stadium full of murmurs turned into disappointment.

Both players appeared evenly matched, and Mirza was better in the placement of the ball, but also made more errors.
Mirza did not hold serve once in the first set, and had six double faults.
In the third set, broke Mirza Rodionova and three times each for left main Rodonova 6-5. In Game 11, Mirza defends four match points to hold serve and force a tiebreaker.
Meanwhile, Sania Mirza and Rushmi Chakravarthi lost the women’s doubles semifinal 4-6, 4-6 to top seed Australian pair of Sally Peers and Anastasia Rodionova.
Sania-Rushmi now play for the match against fellow bronze Nirupama Poojashree Venkatesh Snajeev and Sunday.
Australia’s men’s doubles partner Peter Luczak and Paul Hanley won the gold medal after defeating the British partner Ross Hutchins and Ken Skupski 6-4, 3-6, 6-3 in the final.
But the steam was out of her and she fell 3-1 in a mini-break at any time. Rodionova only lost two points later in the game.
