Rose Bowl Parade Floats

January 1, 2010 by USA Post

Rose Bowl Parade Floats:The Tournament of Roses Parade or Rose Bowl Parade 2010 begins at 8:00 AM PST. It’s a tradition, and sets off a day-long set of festivities in Pasadena, CA that culminates with the Rose Bowl, which this year hosts the Ohio State Buckeyes vs. the Oregon Ducks.

The Rose Bowl is the oldest bowl game, beginning in 1902 and played regularly since 1916. This year’s teams both have 10-2 records.

The Rose Bowl Parade 2010, on the other hand, is the latest installment of a tradition that is known as “America’s New Year Celebration.” It was first held on January 1st, 1890. This year’s telecast will be on ABC.

One of the big draws of the Rose Bowl Parade 2010 are the floats. These are the colorfully and festively decorate motorized celebrations of the thew year, that people come from the world over to watch. It remains a rule of the Rose Parade that all surfaces of a float framework must be covered in natural material (such as flowers, plants, seaweeds, seeds, bark, vegetables, or nuts, for example). No artificial plant material or even coloring are allowed.

Of course, additional excited for the parade viewers is brought by the marching bands of the Rose Bowl Parade 2010. Some of these are picked by tradition, such as the Pasadena City College’s Lancer Marching Band, and some by audition.

Equestrians are always a big part of the parade, and it is the same this year in the Rose Bowl Parade 2010. For the 2010 parade, there will be 23 units. This is up from 2009, when eighteen equestrian units.

Naturally, the position of Grand Marshal is coveted. This year, the Grand Marshal of the Rose Bowl Parade 2010 is none other than Capt. Chesley “Sully” Sullenberger, he of the “Miracle on the Hudson.” In 2009, Last year, actress and Dancing with the Stars contestant Cloris Leachman was the 2009 Grand Marshal. She was only the 10th female grand marshal in the history of the parade.

Every year the Rose Parade has a theme. The theme for the Rose Bowl Parade 2010 is “A Cut Above the Rest.”

Although the Rose Bowl Parade 2010 will, as usual, give out a number of awards, this is only the second year for the The Tournament of Roses Viewers’ Choice Award. Rose Parade fans are given the opportunity vote on one of the 41 magnificent floats as the fan favorite.

In 2009, the Viewers’ Choice Award Winner was Cal Poly University’s”Seaside Amusement.” It received 3,219 votes out of a total of 10,618 votes submitted. To submit your vote for the Viewers’ Choice Award, visit the KTLA website from 10:00 a.m. (PST) to 5:00 p.m. (PST) on January 1.
