Rima Fakih First Muslim

December 4, 2011 by staff

Rima Fakih First Muslim, Dearborn resident Rima Fakih, winner of the 2010 Miss USA Pageant, was arrested early Saturday morning in Highland Park on suspicion of drunk driving.

Police said the 26-year-old Lebanese immigrant was pulled over on Woodward near Glendale. According to WXYZ-7, Fakih blew a .20 on a breathalyzer, more than twice the legal limit of .08. She was detained until about 4:00 PM yesterday.

Fakih initially made posts to Twitter and Facebook denying the arrest, stating that she was outside the state Saturday morning. The posts have since been removed.

Fakih’s attorney told the Detroit Free Press that his client and a friend were on their way to visit another friend when the arrest went down.

The Dearborn woman became the first Muslim to win the Miss USA Pageant when she was awarded the honor on May 16, 2010 in Las Vegas.

Not all Muslims were thrilled by her success in the contest, but Fakih identifies with a more liberal element of the religion.
