Richard Winters

Richard Winters, Dick Winters, one of the veterans who have played a major role in the liberation of Eindhoven on September 18, 1944, is deceased, it was announced Sunday by the family in Hershey, Pennsylvania.

Richard D. Winters, commander of Company E, 2nd Battalion, 506 Parachute Infantry Regiment, 101 Airborne Division became famous following the TV series Band of Brothers, based on the book by Stephen Ambrose.

Winters have died on January 2. But the family did not publicize it, to ensure that the cemetery was flooded with thousands of people. Winters was privately buried Saturday in his hometown of Hershey in Pennsylvania.

Dick Winters was in March 2007 granted the honorary citizenship of Eindhoven. Before traveling to the former mayor A. Sakkers to Hershey for its winter gold pin to pin.
