Richard Holbrooke, (AP) – The State Department said Richard Holbrooke, special envoy for Afghanistan and Pakistan, is in critical condition at a hospital in Washington after surgery to repair a tear in his aorta.

Department spokesman PJ Crowley said the surgery at George Washington University Hospital was completed Saturday morning on the 69-year Holbrooke and his family is with him.

Holbrooke was appointed to his post by President Obama early in his administration.

The veteran diplomat is probably best known for having helped negotiate the 1995 agreement that ended the war in Bosnia.
