Revolutionary Armed Forces Of Colombia, Two Brazilian military helicopters landed in Colombia Monday, waiting for word from rebels to begin a long-awaited mission. The leftist guerrilla group Revolutionary Armed Forces of Colombia has pledged to hand over 10 hostages. All of them were taken prisoner more than a decade ago.
Kidnapping government forces and civilians has been a key strategy of the rebel group in its war with the Colombian government.
Dramatic rescues, escapes and hostage hand-overs have revealed harsh conditions in jungle camps. Prisoners chained to trees. Grueling marches between hideouts. Torrential rain and blistering sun.
The operation was scheduled to begin Monday and continue Wednesday, and it was unclear how many hostages the helicopters would airlift to freedom on Monday.
Two Brazilian helicopters arrived in the central Colombian city of Villavicencio for the handover mission Monday, the International Committee of the Red Cross in Brazil said.
Support from the Red Cross will not end with the reuniting of the hostages with their families, said Jordi Raich, head of the International Committee of the Red Cross delegation.
