Reno Caughlin Fire

Reno Caughlin Fire, 9:20 a.m. update: High winds — but not the Caughlin Fire — have forced the cancellation of at least six round-trip flights, said Heidi Jared of Reno-Tahoe International Airport.

“It’s all due to the winds,” Jared said. “It actually has nothing to do with the (Caughlin) fire.” Several other flights have also been delayed.

Jared said more flight cancellations are possible throughout the day and the airport is urging passengers on any airlines to contact their respective airline’s website.

9:09 a.m. update: A man who Reno spokeswoman this morning said suffered a cardiac arrest has died, though it is unclear if it is related to the Caughlin Fire.

Steve Schroeder, who lives on Aberfeldy Road in the Caughlin Ranch area, said he awoke at to an orange glow outside the windows of his home.

“The fire was coming up that hill to the back of the houses across the street from me,” he said. “Within five minutes, the wind changed and there were sparks falling out of the air toward the house and into my driveway. I said, ‘Wow, we’d better get out.’”

As he and his four children were leaving their house at about 4:30 a.m., officials were beginning to knock on doors to tell people to evacuate.

Schroeder said the evacuation order for their house has been lifted and he was planning to return home to survey the situation.

“I don’t know if we have power or not,” he said.
