Reflections On The USS Arizona Memorial

Reflections On The USS Arizona Memorial, ‘VERY MOVING EXPERIENCE’: Typical resident or not, I lived in Hawaii for three years (2007-10) without once visiting Pearl Harbor. I stopped there briefly in 2007, when I was trying to decide whether to leave my job in Rochester, N.Y., and relocate thousands of miles to a place I had never been to. With only a short time there in between checking apartment prices, I did little more than wander around the visitor center and admire the view of the USS Arizona Memorial and Battleship Missouri.
I made the move there, and a trip to Pearl was something I said I would get around to, but never did.
Fast-forward to October of this year, and I needed to return to Hawaii to attend to personal business. I only spent three days there, but this time I wasn’t going to pass it up.
Due to the ever-present long wait to visit the USS Arizona Memorial, I spent most of the time touring the Missouri, taking lots of pictures and imagining what it must have been like for the men stationed at Pearl and all over Oahu on that Sunday morning 70 years ago.
