Record Store Day

April 19, 2014 by

Record Store Day, Organizers said it’s a special day for customers who still love spinning that vinyl.

Although vinyl remains a niche market, it’s growing. Industry sources report that sales of vinyl records in the U.S. increased 32 percent last year.

At Armadillo Music in Davis, half the sales in the small shop are oldies and new vinyl.

But it’s not just nostalgic boomers buying records.

“It’s a mixture between collectors and the younger generation who missed out on records to begin with,” said manager Brian Rodriguez. “They like the artwork and holding a tangible product.”

Customer Paul Webb was asking about special releases available at the store on Record Store Day.

“It’s got more personality than CDs and MP3s,” he said holding an LP of classical music. “And I like their texture and how they are made.”

Dimple Records, which has six stores in the Sacramento region, has prepared special promotions, giveaways, DJs and live music to celebrate Record Store Day.

Some 400 new vinyl releases and reissue albums will be released on Saturday.

“There are special, limited, exclusive items that are made up for just fans, people who love music and love different artists,” said Dilyn Radakovitz, owner of Dimple Records.
