Today, the mayor of Chicago – the country’s third largest city – announced that he will run for reelection. At a press conference at City Hall, surrounded by his wife and children, Daley said of his choice, “It feels good.”
“Many of you search to find what is behind my decision,” said Daley. “It’s simple. I have always believed that everyone, particularly public officials must understand when it’s time to move on. For me that time is now.”
But for a job that has not been competitive in two decades, Daley’s decision leaves the door open to wide speculation about who will run in its place.
Dr. Larry Sabato, director of the Center of the University of Virginia for the common and someone with a reputation for accurately predicting the outcome of campaigns, said that his money is in the White House Chief of Staff Rahm Emanuel.
“I would be surprised if it is not running,” Sabato said in an interview with the daily calls. He noted that in the past, Emanuel has said that his current position is a would apply only to about 18 months.
“Well, we hit the mark of 18 months,” said Sabato, who gave three reasons why the offer of one of the most powerful men in Washington and a master of the Chicago political machine is likely.
“It is near Daley, has expressed interest, and the position is not open very often,” said Sabato. “It’s so perfect.”
James Merriner, former political editor of the Chicago Sun-Times, said he also plans a career TheDC Emanuel is imminent. Merriner also said that Daley’s time for your ad may have been strategic.
“It’s kind of a nasty thing to do,” said Merrin. “There are only about 10 weeks to file to run, making it easier for politicians to set.” Moreover, the primaries are held in February 2011. That is not to give lesser-known candidates ample time to organize a successful campaign.
“And if we take him [Emmanuel] at his word, he will take advantage of this opportunity,” said Merrin.
Emanuel will be in Chicago on Sunday for a fundraising event.
