PINE NUTS RECALL, The FDA has recently announced that Wegmans supermarket chain is recalling 5,000 pounds of Turkish pine nuts because of the risk of possible contamination with Salmonella Enteritidis.

The nuts, which were offered in unlabeled plastic bulk containers and food items sold at Wegmans like Caprese salad and asparagus with pine nuts, have been linked to 43 cases of salmonellosis in California, Maryland, New York, Pennsylvania, New Jersey and Virginia. Symptoms include diarrhea, fever and abdominal cramps 12 to 72 hours after infection.

While the illness usually only lasts 4 to 7 days, some cases could become fatal if not treated. Consumers who purchased nuts from Wegmans between July 1 and October 18 can either throw the nuts out or return them for a refund.
