Speaking in Jakarta at the start of a whirlwind visit to the country, Mr Obama said he had worked hard to repair frayed relations with the international Muslim community.
But he admitted he did not think “we’re going to completely eliminate some of the misunderstandings and mistrust.”
The president revealed he wanted to make sure America was “building bridges and expanding our interactions with Muslim countries”.
Mr Obama is in Indonesia to hold trade talks with President Susilo Bambang Yudhoyono and other government officials.
