Out Of Africa, The Safari Rally was one of the classic events in the history of world rally. And now it seems that the rally cars could be seen in Africa again, according to Motorsport South Africa CEO Francois Pretorius. He even talking about having a running event in two years.
Pretorius said: “We are near a station next candidate event and is intended to be back on the calendar in 2013. Right now we are talking about the event location and nature of the type of event it is. Will be an event of Africa, one where the drivers know where they are in competition. ”
One of the strongest candidates is an event in South Africa, which has already entered into negotiations with the promoters of this sport. Since Jean Todt became president of the FIA, not hidden his desire for the sport back to its traditional roots.
And perhaps not surprisingly, some of the major decision makers agree with him.
WRC Director Michele Mouton said: “I know that the return to Safari is almost impossible, but Africa is very, very important for the sport of rallying.”
The Safari Rally last appeared in a truly international calendar as an event Intercontinental Rally Challenge, while even the Dakar Rally in Africa came in 2009. Now, all that could change.
