Onslow County Schools, The governor of North Carolina issued the state of emergency on Wednesday on the heels of tropical storm warnings issued by the Onslow County and Carteret hurricane warnings.

Onslow County can expect winds of 40-50 mph with gusts up to 60 kilometers per hour and 8-15 foot swells and switches on the beaches, the Onslow County Emergency Services Deputy Director Norman Bryson said. Rainfall is expected to be 2.1 inches.

Three emergency shelters in Onslow County is open Thursday at 4 pm they are located in Dixon Middle School, located at 200 Dixon School Road in Holly Ridge, Swansboro High School, located at 161 Queens Creek Road, and Jacksonville Commons Middle School, located at 318 pounds Unit. Jacksonville Commons is the only location that will consider pets.

Onslow County Schools operate regularly scheduled classroom on Thursday with all after school extracurricular activities either postponed or canceled. Onslow County Schools will implement a two-hour delay for all schools on Friday. Parents should monitor; website of the school,, or online weather school, 910-989-2211, for updates.

No decisions have been made about curfews or restrictions on alcohol sales.

A control group meeting is scheduled for 9 am Thursday at which time staff may take additional measures.

Onslow County Emergency Operations Center was fully activated at noon on Thursday.

Carteret County will open a shelter in Newport Middle School at noon on Thursday, according to county officials. A special needs shelter will open in Leon Mann Senior Center at 8 am Thursday.
