Olympic Luger Dies After Major Crash |

Nodar Kumaritashvili, 21 years, was training at the center of Whistler Sliding in Whistler, BC, when his sled veered off course and crashed into Olympic pole of steel at 90 miles per hour, reported Reuters. Olympic official confirmed the death of the BBC.

“Georgian sliding Nodar Kumaritashvili has had a serious accident in the final range of formal training for the men’s singles on Friday”, in an official statement says. “But he came out of the path when it crashed. And was treated on site by the medical staff administered by the Committee of Permanent Representatives, and then taken away in an ambulance.”

After the incident, training was suspended on the spot. Before the crash on Friday, has raised concerns about the safety of athletes to track and Whistler. Already many of the athletes, including Romania and Violeta Stramaturaru, who was unconscious, had been involved in accidents on the road, which is used for luge, skeleton and bobsleigh.

Kumaritashvili has competed in five World Cup races this season already, and was ranked 44th in the world rankings.
