Obama & FB Town Hall

April 21, 2011 by USA Post

Obama & FB Town Hall, The visit of President Obama this afternoon at the school of Facebook was launched as an opportunity for him to “connect with Americans across the country” through a virtual “town hall” meeting.

But it also proved to be an opportunity for the president to launch political blows to Republicans in a fight in progress on deficit reduction, fiscal policy, and a dispute that threatens the increased debt limit.

A deficit reduction plan recently proposed by Rep. Paul Ryan, the Republican chairman of the House budget committee, is “pretty radical,” Obama said. Ryan aims to reduce public expenditure and at least $ 4 trillion over the next decade.

“I would not call it particularly brave,” said Obama. He added: “If all we’re doing is spending cuts, and we do not discriminate on the matter, whether we are using a machete instead of a knife … then the deficit may actually worsen it could fall back on another recession. ”

The event was described as a “shared responsibility and shared prosperity” public meeting open to employees of Facebook, which was also broadcast via Livestream. Will be available as video on demand “soon after the event,” said a representative from Facebook.

What Facebook allows us to do is make sure that this is not just a one-way conversation, “Obama said to a few thousand people who gathered here this evening.” Not only am I talking to you, but also you’re talking again. We are in conversation. We are in dialogue. ”

Hosting today’s event was CEO of Facebook, Mark Zuckerberg, who said he was a little nervous by the council. Obama joked, to loud applause, which was his appearance that persuaded the famous founder informal wear: “I’m the guy who got Mark to wear a vest and tie Thanks I’m very proud of it…” (Both then removed the jacket.)

Zuckerberg questions, mainly about the economy, immigration and health care. Privacy is not out. Neither legalization of marijuana, which was a topic that has received considerable public attention on this type of event before. (Zuckerberg ended the event giving Obama what looked a lot like a hoodie Facebook.)

A few protesters stood outside on Page Mill Road, with signs reading, “Stop spending.” While most people inside the storage space, as seemed Facebook employees and journalists, over people had queued in the “guest” entry and security check an hour before Obama arrived. Inside, before the event started, Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, a California Democrat, he ran on the stage floor.

Probably the best applause line of the event was on immigration reform, particularly for foreign citizens educated in the United States. “If we are intelligent people who want to come here and start a business, especially if they have advanced degrees,” Why do not you stay? ” Obama asked. “Why are we sending to another place? … These are the generators of employment.”

The White House responded to questions via the Internet – but in a departure from previous councils in line did not allow the public to vote on issues that the president should ask.

That moves appears designed to limit the influence of Americans who have flooded the virtual ballot box to pressure Obama on the legalization of marijuana.

March 2009 Town Hall Obama using Google Moderator for the public to cast 3,600,000 votes that qualified questions about the legalization of marijuana on the top of the “green jobs”, “financial stability”, and “sections of the budget (and came in a close second in the health care section as well.) Sample question: “What are your plans for the no,” War on Drugs “, which is sucking money from taxpayers and put people in jail nonviolent more time than violent criminals”

Obama responded by saying he would not support the reform of the federal drug laws that make even the possession of marijuana a crime. “No, I do not think this is a good strategy to grow our economy,” he said.

A January 2011 City Council that took place in Obama also took a detour YouTube legalizes pot, with about 198 of the 200 homes qualified questions on that topic.

After the event on Facebook, Obama will head to San Francisco for an event at the Masonic Auditorium and 35,800, and the fundraising dinner plate offered by Marc Benioff, chairman and CEO of Tomorrow is directed to Los Angeles for more fundraising (payment and 10,000 and get a photo with the president.)
