Nick Charles SportscasterNick Charles Sportscaster, Announcer Nick Charles, who became the first anchor of CNN, sports, has died after a fight of two years with bladder cancer. He was 64.

The cable network based in Atlanta, said Charles died in Santa Fe, NM He started with the network when it launched in 1980.

CNN Worldwide President Jim Walton said Saturday that Charles helped CNN on the map with their intelligence, style and passion.

Walton said in a statement that his passing is a loss of CNN, the world of sport and for the fans and friends everywhere.

Chris Berman of ESPN is reflected in the place of Carlos in a friendly rivalry between the fledgling cable networks.

“We are all saddened by passing Nick,” Berman said in a statement. “In the 80 to us as competitors, but we never felt that way. Instead, the feeling was more than admiration. I learned watching on television back then, and I learned even more impossible to see him handle a situation with class and dignity. “
