NHL Draft Lottery 2012, The Edmonton Oilers weren’t the only ones to strike it rich on Tuesday as the 2012 SCOTIABANK NHL DRAFT LOTTERY delivered its largest audience ever to TSN and RDS. Preliminary overnight data from BBM Canada confirms a record 941,000 viewers (602,000 on TSN and 339,000 on RDS) watched as NHL Deputy Commissioner Bill Daly revealed the draft order with the #1 overall pick in the 2012 NHL DRAFT going to Oilers GM Steve Tambellini.
On TSN, the 2012 SCOTIABANK NHL DRAFT LOTTERY was the most-watched NHL draft lottery ever and marked a 65% increase in viewers compared to last year.
Fans were equally engaged on RDS as it was the first time the network aired a special NHL Draft Lottery edition of HOCKEY 360.
With three Canadian teams in the running for the coveted #1 overall pick, audience levels peaked at 1.2 million viewers on TSN and RDS as Daly revealed the draft lottery results in reverse order. Overall, 1.8 million unique viewers watched some or all of last night’s draft lottery on both networks.
Online, TSN.ca attracted 9,000 fans to its live 30-minute NHL Draft Lottery blog, while #TSN and #NHLDraft were trending on Twitter in Canada last night.
TSN’s live broadcast of the 2012 SCOTIABANK NHL DRAFT LOTTERY also aired live on TSN Mobile TV in Canada and NBC Sports Network in the U.S. The broadcast is currently available on demand on TSN.ca.
This marks the third year in a row that the Edmonton Oilers own the #1 overall pick and the second time the team has won the lottery. In addition, it’s the first time in the history of the NHL Draft Lottery that a team with the second-greatest percentage likelihood of winning the lottery has gone home with the #1 overall selection.
