NHL ALL STAR GAME

January 30, 2011 by staff

NHL ALL STAR GAME, Alex Ovechkin took care of the flash and Zdeno Chara of the explosion. Together, they helped make Eric Staal looks like a pretty clever general manager.

Ovechkin won his third straight challenge breakaway, Chara beat his own record of 2 years for shooting the most powerful players on the All-Star team set up Staal won five of six events Saturday evening competition NHL SuperSkills.

In this prelude to an All-Star Game like no other, the team of Staal led from start to finish in a 33-22 victory over the team Lidstrom.

“I thought we did very well” the choice of the team, “said Staal.” Obviously, we’ll see (Sunday) during the game, but tonight he worked with some good wins in some events. ”

In this prelude to an All-Star Game like no other, the team of Staal led from start to finish in a 33-22 victory over the team Lidstrom.

(AP) – Nicklas Lidstrom of first choice in the draft inaugural NHL All-Star fantasy was his only bad one – choosing the wrong side of the puck back with the No. 1 selection on the line.

Eric Staal of the Carolina Hurricanes host quickly picked up goaltender Cam Ward – his teammate – in the first row for the team Staal.

“I was the best player available, I guess,” Ward joked. “Yeah, I was surprised. He did not tell me. He would not give his card at all. Obviously, I knew I had a better chance of having to choose me from the beginning because he is a good friend and teammate. But I do not know if he really wanted to really make me sweat. ”

The rest of the lists for the All-Star game on Sunday – and Saturday night skills competition – were filled with 36 players were selected in the unique project in which there was really no way to choose a bust.

“I saw the last All-Star games, and it’s not exactly the guardian of the environment, said Ward.” This is how you approach it that matters. I am here to celebrate and be proud to be All-Star and have fun. I’m not too crowded so I scored five times or something like that.

“I must do something because I’m the first overall pick. I guess I should be lights out. ”

Staal has done more to explain his decision to go with Ward.

“It is a great goalie, and won a Stanley Cup with him,” said Staal Hurricanes 2006 champion.

Team Lidstrom was barely affected by the poor puck luck, because she was able to capture the league leader in goals, Steven Stamkos of Tampa Bay, with the second choice.

“It was kind of a pick easy for us,” Lidstrom said.

Twice NHL MVP Alexander Ovechkin was taken No. 3 Staal other captain Mike Green, who has proudly announced the resumption of his Washington Capitals teammate. Ryan Kesler Vancouver is the other assistant Staal.

Lidstrom has received advice from his deputies; Tampa Bay, Martin St. Louis and Patrick Kane of defending Stanley Cup champion Chicago Blackhawks.

“No arguments,” said Lidstrom. “You’re a little back and forth debating who to choose.”

Not available was perhaps the biggest star in the NHL. Pittsburgh Penguins captain Sidney Crosby was forced to miss the festivities due to the effects of a concussion sustained earlier this month. Crosby and Stamkos tied last season with 51 league goals better.

After 34 players left the board, he fell in Toronto Phil Kessel and Paul Stastny of the Colorado Avalanche to determine who would be the first hockey All-Star “Mr. irrelevant.” Kessel got the dubious distinction of being the last pick when the team of Staal selected Stastny.

“I’m just happy to be here,” said Kessel, who acknowledged that the wait was nerve-racking.

He did not leave empty handed, however. He was rewarded with a new car, and a donation will be made to a charity of choice of Kessel.

The NHL has invented this new All-Star format after five years of pitting the Eastern Conference against the Western Conference, after a race in North America All-Stars against their counterparts in the world. There is no All-Star Game last season because of the long break for the Olympics in Vancouver.

Although this project was really fun and games, it was not without intrigue.

The reigning Conn Smythe Trophy winner Jonathan Toews of the Blackhawks seemed to be annoyed and embarrassed when he was shown on television that are waiting impatiently to be rescued from the crowd. Her ordeal ended when Kane drew the name at the resumed 16th Toews team Lidstrom.

“Everybody says that,” Toews said of his apparently unhappy expression. “It was not a big deal.”

Henrik and Daniel Sedin twins in Vancouver Canucks will be participating for the first time. Daniel went to the No. 5 team Staal, Henrik and went right after him to the team to six Lidstrom.

Staal did his younger brother Marc, a defenseman with the New York Rangers, sweat on his time during a certain time – leave it on the board until the resumption 13.

He even added to the drama after Marc told a television interview to be devastated to be passed over. When Eric started to make his pick 11, he said, “the New York Rangers Henrik Lundqvist….”

Staal has readily admitted that he wanted to rub a little.

“Yes,” said Eric Staal. “I felt a little sick to hesitate, then said Hank.”

Marc has threatened to withhold future Christmas and birthday gifts from Eric before his name was finally announced, and once softened, he joined his brother – with whom he has never been a teammate.

The couple shared a handshake.

“We’re fine,” said Marc. “I was just playing mind games. I do not really have that much. I have not played with Eric my whole life, so it will be pretty cool in itself “.

Although it was mostly light, this project are a few basic rules.

Each list was composed of three goaltenders, six defensemen and 12 forwards. Only six players not subject to the draft were those selected as captains. Twelve recruits were also up for bids to participate only in the skills competition.

Both teams had to complete their part of the goalkeepers and defenders 10th round by round 15. The All-Star Game is most often on the front in typical free-flowing style that has almost never produced a hit.

Staal is sure to have fans squarely on his side, first with the resumption of the district, then 18-year-old forward Jeff Skinner, the third representative Hurricanes. Skinner joins former Red Wings captain Steve Yzerman of Detroit as the only players age 18 to be NHL stars.

“We thought it would come first. No surprise really,” Lidstrom said of Ward. “We were thinking about him, but we thought it would go away.

“I know he is a fan favorite here. I talked to Eric about it later, and he said he is probably the greatest player here. We’ll let it slide and let it play his home team. ”
